<h2>I'm Kina Collins and I'm running for Congress</h2><h4>I was born and raised in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood on the West Side. Growing up, I saw both the promise and the pain of our community. When I was a child, I witnessed the murder of someone I knew, and that moment changed my life. It showed me how deeply our neighborhoods are impacted by violence and how urgently we need change. </p><h5>From that moment on, I committed myself to fighting for justice, safety, and opportunity for all of us.</h5><p>After graduating from Chicago Public Schools, I attended&nbsp; Louisiana State University, came back home, and dedicated my life to public service and community organizing. <strong>In 2017, I founded the Chicago Neighborhood Alliance to empower residents in violence-impacted neighborhoods to build civic power and take action to change their communities.<br></strong></p><p>As a <strong>nationally recognized leader in the movement to end gun violence</strong>, I have worked to hold corporations accountable and push for solutions that treat gun violence as a public health crisis, not just a policing issue. As the <strong>Executive Director of One Aim Illinois,</strong> I led efforts to hold gun manufacturers and dealers accountable for fueling the flow of illegal guns into our neighborhoods. I also had the honor of <strong>serving on the Biden-Harris transition team</strong>, helping to shape the national agenda for gun violence prevention.<strong><br></strong></p>

I was proud to serve as the council’s inaugural chair, and later worked with the Chicago City Clerk’s Office on the city’s “Status of Women &amp; Girls” initiative.</p><p>I also served as <strong>Vice President of Women’s March Illinois,</strong> where I helped mobilize thousands around intersectional feminist issues and reproductive justice.<strong><br></strong></p><p>As <strong>Executive Director of the Democratizing Philanthropy Project</strong>, I worked nationally to help grassroots and frontline organizations build independent, sustainable funding so they could <strong>focus on what matters most: serving their communities, not answering to top-down donors.<br></strong></p><p>I also served as a National Organizer with Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), where I helped </p><span class="image image-base image-right" style="width: 40%;"><span class="image-inner-wrapper"><img src="https://run.imgix.net/cec854dd-6337-49af-b3e0-77d25db4732b/68bc7f32-0da8-465f-8825-18c7441b709a/68bc7f32-0da8-465f-8825-18c7441b709a.jpeg?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=70%2C102%2C568%2C408&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="40" variant="base"></span><span class="caption" style="display: none"></span></span><p><strong>train over 20,000 doctors and medical students to advocate for single-payer, universal healthcare</strong>. <h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary)">Environment: Protecting Our Communities and Planet</span></h4><p>Environmental justice is a public health issue, an economic issue, and a civil rights issue. <strong>As your Congresswoman, I will fight to ensure that every community, especially low-income and marginalized neighborhoods, has access to clean air, safe water, healthy food, and sustainable energy.</strong></p><h5>Climate Readiness &amp; Mitigation</h5><p>Climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable communities. In Congress, I will:</p><ul><li><p>T<strong>ie federal climate resilience funding to community engagement,</strong> requiring low-income and minority populations to be included in planning and development decisions.</p></li><li><p><strong>Increase funding for agencies studying climate change,</strong> including the EPA, NASA, NOAA, and the Department of the Interior.</p></li><li><p><strong>Support locally-driven research</strong> in states and municipalities most impacted by climate threats to identify solutions tailored to community needs.<br><br></p></li></ul><h5>Lead Poisoning &amp; Childhood Asthma Prevention</h5><p>Our children’s health is also threatened by environmental hazards. Research shows that parts of the 7th Congressional District face <strong>dangerous levels of lead in water</strong> and <strong>air toxins</strong> that contribute to <strong>high rates of lead poisoning and childhood asthma, </strong>disproportionately impacting <strong>working-class Black and Latinx communities.</strong></p><p>As your Congresswoman, <strong>I will treat these threats as national public health emergencies.</strong> I will work to <strong>create a national task force of experts and community leaders</strong> dedicated to preventing lead exposure and reducing asthma triggers in schools and neighborhoods. Strong and swift investments in <strong>prevention, remediation, and community health programs</strong> can protect entire generations of children from lifelong damage.</p><h5>Public Health &amp; Environmental Justice</h5><p>Environmental hazards are public health crises. I will:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Ensure health insurers cover care for pollution-related illnesses</strong> and advocate for remediation of Superfund and contaminated sites in disproportionately impacted communities.</p></li><li><p><strong>Push for data collection on environmental injustice,</strong> so we can track damage and take targeted action to prevent and repair harm.</p></li><li><p><strong>Expand the Healthy Food Financing Initiative,</strong> creating access to grocery stores and sustainable farming programs in underserved communities.</p></li></ul><h5>Renewable Energy &amp; Green Jobs</h5><p>We must transition to a clean, equitable energy economy. I support:</p><ul><li><p><strong>A Green New Deal and rapid decarbonization of the power grid,</strong> aiming for 100% renewable energy by 2035.</p></li><li><p><strong>Rejoin the </strong><a href="https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/paris-agreement"><strong>Paris Climate Accords</strong></a> and commit to significant carbon emission reductions across all sectors.</p></li><li><p><strong>Expanding STEAM education and financing programs</strong> for small businesses developing clean energy technologies, ensuring equity in the emerging green workforce.<br><br></p></li></ul><h5>Reducing Toxics &amp; Pollution</h5><p>Communities deserve protection from environmental toxins. I will:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Empower the EPA to enforce and expand regulations</strong> on toxic waste in air, water, and soil.</p></li><li><p><strong>Support the </strong><a href="https://www.booker.senate.gov/news/press/booker-pallone-reintroduce-bill-to-hold-polluters-responsible-for-cleanup-of-superfund-sites"><strong>S.2183 - Superfund Polluter Pays Restoration Act of 2021</strong></a>, ensuring polluting industries fund the cleanup of affected communities.<br><br></p></li></ul><h5>Mass Transit &amp; Electric Vehicles</h5><p>Equitable transportation is key to a sustainable future. I will:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Protect and expand tax incentives for EV buyers and manufacturers,</strong> promoting clean technology.</p></li><li><p><strong>Create a regional planning body</strong> to improve access to safe, sustainable transit options in all neighborhoods.</p></li><li><p><strong>Prioritize electrification in low-income and minority communities, </strong>which often rely on public transit but have historically been overlooked.<br><br></p></li></ul><h5>Protecting Public Lands &amp; Tribal Sovereignty</h5><p>Our public lands and natural resources are national treasures. The average Social Security benefit barely covers the cost of rent in Chicago, and <strong>prescription drug prices have more than tripled</strong> over the past decade. In neighborhoods like Austin and Lawndale, many seniors live on fixed incomes in aging housing stock that’s unsafe or inaccessible, while vital programs like Meals on Wheels and in-home care remain underfunded.</p><p></p><p><strong>Our elders deserve better. </strong></p><p>They deserve the peace of mind they have earned through a lifetime of work and contribution. That’s why <strong>I will protect and expand Social Security and Medicare</strong>, not cut them. I’ll oppose any effort to raise the retirement age or privatize these essential programs. Instead, I’ll support the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/4583">Social Security 2100 Act (H.R. 4583)</a>, which strengthens the trust fund, expands benefits, and ensures every senior can retire with dignity.</p><p></p><p><strong>I will also champion the </strong><a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/3421"><strong>Medicare for All Act (H.R. 3421)</strong></a><strong>,</strong> ensuring that every senior and every person has full coverage for vision, dental, hearing, and long-term care.
